A Great Austrian Meal at Landhaushof Restaurant Klagenfurt

We were counting our blessings as we left our sleeping kids with the babysitters, and almost kicking our heels as we ran down the street to our dinner reservation at the Landhaushof.

It was the first night with just the two of us, after two straight years of looking after babies with no break or time-out.

I don’t know if this influenced our appreciation and enjoyment of our meal, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it did!

The Landhaushof is actually part of the historic Landhaus building – something like Klagenfurt’s local council headquarters. Situated at one end of Alter Platz, you can’t miss it, it has a large clock tower overlooking a large cobblestone square.

They have tables and chairs outside on the square complete with little candles and an almost TV-like view of the goings-on in the kitchen. It was a cool night so we made our way indoors - we were glad we did - the atmosphere is so warm and very inviting. The ceilings are vaulted and beautiful; impressive deep-set windows make you realise just how strong these Austrian buildings are built; a slightly quirky painting of the (ex?) mayor with his mates (beer and pretzel in hand) gives the restaurant a bit of character.

You dine alongside local Klagenfurters (I made that up), well-off business men and women judging from their clothes.

The menu provides a good insight into traditional Austrian fare, it includes the ever-present gulaschsuppe, dumplings (kasnodel), meatballs (knodel) and more meat.

I ordered juicy lamb cutlets with generous mash potato, and green beans wrapped in bacon, accompanied with an excellent house red, it was very satisfying! The star of the night however was the incredible pork fillet with vegetables and hash browns. The pork was incredibly moist and tender with no fat. I couldn’t believe it was really pork! The hash browns were the best we’ve ever eaten. Together with the pork and vegetable gravy, true scrumptiousness was achieved.

If you only have one night to eat out in Klagenfurt and you want something that really captures the Austrian spirit, I’d highly recommend the Landhaushof.
