Stunning Views and a Lovely Meal at Maria Loretto Restaurant in
Klagenfurt
With magnificent lake views, friendly service and excellent food,
lunch at Maria Loretto was a meal we won’t forget.
We dined at Maria Loretto on a beautiful, crisp winter’s day. As we
walked from the car to the restaurant I was gob-smacked by the view. The
restaurant is situated where the canal meets the lake, about 500 metres
from the Klagenfurt Standbad. Worthersee was sparkling aqua and at its
very best.

You can dine alfresco on the pretty manicured lawns where they have
placed a number of elegant tables and chairs, but probably the best
views are from the spacious verandah on the first floor where we chose
to sit.
There was a lot to choose from the menu. We didn’t have time to
casually peruse the long list as we were juggling two wriggling,
writhing kids! However we did notice that they offered an extensive
seafood menu.

We quickly decided to have the day’s set menu – a pumpkin, balsamic
salad (it was ok) followed by a delectable pumpkin soup (left us wanting
more). For mains it was locally caught fish, pan fried with a hint of
ginger, served on a bed of creamy mash potato, and also a plate of
mushroom tagliatelle for the kids.
The
tagliatelle was ok, the kids liked it! The mushroom they used is called
‘schwammerl’, we’d seen many punnets for sale at the weekly Klagenfurt
market, and we’d been very curious as to what it would taste like. It’s
more flavoursome than your average mushroom you get at the supermarket
(white tops, brown/black frilly bits on the undersides – we’re no
mushroom experts!). I think it would have been nicer if they were cooked
a little softer, certainly the flavour was very nice.
The outstanding part of the meal was the fish. The skin was crispy,
the meat tender and melt-your-mouth, and it tasted great! We highly
recommend it!
(Unfortunately we forgot to take photos of our meals!)
We didn’t get to test the waiting staff’s English, as we very bravely
ordered everything in German. The man who served us, in particular, was
very smiley and friendly.
The restaurant also has a swing set on its grounds, plus little
plastic cubby house for kids to run amok, so they try their best to
accommodate families.
Personally I think this restaurant should be enjoyed without little
tackers so you can fully appreciate the beautiful views and relax with
your wine and eat in peace!!!! It’s definitely has the right setting for
a romantic meal for two.
